Protecting Birds with FeatherFriendly Products in Guanajuato, México.
The Cuenca de La Esperanza Natural Protected Area, located 5 km north of Guanajuato, is a stunning natural enclave bordered by the Guanajuato-Dolores Hidalgo highway and scenic rural communities such as Joya de Lobos, Santa Rosa, La Concepción and Los Mexicanos.
This picturesque area is characterized by its diverse vegetation, including seven species of Oak Forest (Quercus Sp.), elegant Madroño Trees and resilient Pinguica Trees. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including White-tailed Deer, Wild Cats, Cacomixtles, Striped Skunks, Long-nosed Bats and over 170 species of birds.
Nestled within this natural paradise is the Las Palomas Visitor Center, a hub for environmental education and recreation activities. It offers immersive experiences for visitors, including birding, hiking, camping, excursions, landscape photography and mountain biking. Moreover, the Center hosts programs focusing on environmental education for children and provides facilities for work meetings. It is well-equipped with food and beverage services.
During a recent visit, we took a proactive step to contribute to the conservation of this natural wonder by donating and installing FeatherFriendly Window Collision Tape on the Visitor Center’s kitchen window in order to dramatically reduce bird collisions.
This initiative is particularly vital as the area has been grappling with challenges such as a prolonged drought since October 2023 and a severe hail storm in June 2024, which have had a significant impact on bird populations.
We’re grateful to Barry Coombs, who helped source and deliver these Window Collision Tape kits to Mexico. This enabled us at ROACOMX to distribute them in various Natural Protected Areas of Guanajuato, furthering our commitment to conservation efforts in the region.
